Description
The grand scale of the first architectural projects of the Moscow new style corresponded to ambitious plans of Catherine II. On April 21 1764 on her order there was found the first Moscow classical ensemble of the Orphanage. Along with charity its main purpose was to raise a "new man". Presumably the project was created by a Saint Petersburg architect Y. Felten. The construction continued till 1790-s with the participation of the architects K. Blanck, Y. Ananiiev, I. Sitnikov, I. Gilardi. Monumental composition, strict and solemn architecture of the building defined the scale for the rest of public constructions of Moscow classical period, the scale that is worth the ideals of Enlightment.
