Moscow of that time had a particular character of construction differing this city much from Saint Petersburg. The noble republic of Moscow was filled up with luxury houses-palaces.
The only building by Bazhenov that keeps the French origins of his classicist language is Pashkov House (1784-1788). It seems that in this "magic palace", as it was called by the contemporaries, everything was perfect: the absolute clarity of a strictly symmetrical composition, flawless proportions, fine elaboration of architectural details. Special aspects of these details - design of column caps and of piers, decoration that cover all the facades - form the outstanding artistic style of an eminent architect, expressed in a unique ensemble of the triumph of the beauty.
